Charles Stuart, the 5th Earl of Lennox, was a nobleman who lived in the 1500s. He was born in April or May 1557 and passed away in April 1576. Charles was the fourth son of Matthew Stewart, 4th Earl of Lennox and Margaret Douglas, who was the daughter of Margaret Tudor. This made him a great-grandson of King Henry VII of England. His older brother was Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley, who was married to Mary, Queen of Scots. This means Charles was the uncle of King James VI and I, who later became King of both Scotland and England.

Charles Stuart's Life

Becoming Earl of Lennox

Charles Stuart's father, the 4th Earl of Lennox, was a very important person. He acted as a regent for his young grandson, King James VI of Scotland. A regent is someone who rules a country when the king or queen is too young. Charles's older brother, Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley, was King James's father, but he had died in 1567.

When Charles's father passed away in 1571, the title of Earl of Lennox usually would have gone to King James VI. This would mean the title would join with the Crown, becoming part of the King's own titles. However, soon after his father's death, the title was given to Charles. This was like creating the title again, but for a younger branch of the same family.

Marriage and Family

Charles Stuart later married Elizabeth Cavendish. This marriage made Queen Elizabeth I of England unhappy because it happened quickly and without her full approval. Elizabeth Cavendish was the daughter of a powerful woman named Bess of Hardwick.

Charles and Elizabeth had one child, a daughter named Lady Arbella Stuart. Even though Charles became Earl, King James, who was still a child, eventually took over the earldom. Queen Elizabeth I tried to help Lady Arbella, but the title still went to King James.

Lady Arbella Stuart later married William Seymour. She was later held in the Tower of London and died there in 1615.

His Passing

Charles Stuart himself became ill and passed away in early April 1576.
