Charles T. Tatham (born September 3, 1854 – died September 24, 1939) was an American fencer. A fencer is an athlete who competes in the sport of fencing. He competed in the 1904 Summer Olympics. Charles Tatham was born and died in New York City.
Tatham was a very skilled fencer. In 1901, he won the national titles for both individual épée and individual foil. Épée and foil are two different types of swords used in fencing. He won the individual épée title again in 1902 and 1903. He was also part of the team that won the National Team Épée title in 1908.
Olympic Achievements
At the 1904 Summer Olympics in St. Louis, Charles Tatham won three medals. He earned two silver medals. One was for the individual épée competition. The other was for the team foil competition. He also won a bronze medal in the individual foil event.
Representing Cuba
Even though Charles Tatham was born in the United States, the official report for the 1904 Olympics said he represented Cuba. Most athletes at the 1904 games were from the United States. However, some were listed as representing a country where their families originally came from.
Founding Fencing Organizations
In 1891, Charles Tatham helped start an important fencing group. This group was first called the AFLA. Today, it is known as the USFA. This organization helps promote and organize fencing competitions across the United States.
