Charles Tillman (born around 1932 or 1933) is an American politician. He served on the Jackson, Mississippi City Council for twelve years. He also became the acting mayor of Jackson after the previous mayor, Chokwe Lumumba, passed away. This made him the fifth African-American mayor in a row for the city.

About Charles Tillman
His Early Life and Education
Charles Tillman earned his first degree, a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), in business education in 1958. He studied at Alcorn State University. Later, in 1962, he received a Master of Arts (M.A.) degree. This degree was in guidance and counseling from the University of Southern California.
He continued his studies at other universities too. He took extra classes at Atlanta University. He also completed post-graduate courses at the University of Notre Dame and Jackson State University.
Serving the Community and Schools
Mr. Tillman started his career helping students. He worked as a counselor at Rowan and Brinkley middle schools in Jackson. After that, he became a school principal. He even served as the president of the Jackson Public Schools Board.
He was a very active volunteer in his community. This passion for helping others led him to run for a position on the Jackson City Council in 2005.
Joining the City Council
In May 2005, Charles Tillman ran for the Ward 5 council member spot. He won the Democratic primary election by a small number of votes. He received 903 votes, while his opponent, Betty Dagner-Cook, received 845 votes.
On June 7, 2005, he won the general election. He defeated Joe Louis Sanders, an independent candidate. Tillman received 2,586 votes, and Sanders received 384 votes. He served on the City Council for many years.
Becoming Acting Mayor
After Mayor Chokwe Lumumba passed away, Charles Tillman stepped in. He was sworn in as the acting mayor on February 25, 2014. He served in this important role for a few months.
His time as acting mayor ended on April 24, 2014. That's when Tony Yarber was sworn in as the new mayor after a special election.
Later Years in Public Service
In 2021, Charles Tillman ran for a fourth term on the City Council. However, he was defeated in that election. Vernon Hartley won with 936 votes, while Tillman received 482 votes.
Awards and Recognition
Charles Tillman has received special awards for his community work. In 1982, he earned the Governor's Distinguished Service Award. This award recognized his excellent voluntary community service.
He also received the National Council of Negro Women's Appreciation Award. This award was given for his outstanding and dedicated service.
Personal Life
Charles Tillman is a father. He has two children.
