Lieutenant-General Charles Wright Younghusband (June 20, 1821 – October 28, 1899) was a British Army officer. He was also a scientist who studied weather, known as a meteorologist. He received special honors for his work.
Early Life and Family
Charles Younghusband was the son of Major-General Charles Younghusband. His mother was Frances Romer. Charles had four brothers. All of his brothers also became officers in the Army, just like their father.
Army Career and Science Work
Charles followed his father into the Royal Artillery. This is a special part of the British Army that uses cannons and other big guns. When he was 16 years old, people said he was probably the youngest and smallest officer in the entire service.
When he was 20, Charles moved to Canada. He became the acting leader of the Toronto Magnetic and Meteorological Observatory. This was a scientific place where people studied Earth's magnetic field and weather patterns. He was the director there from 1841 to 1844.
Later in his career, he served in a war called the Crimea. He also became the superintendent, or boss, of the Royal Gun Factories. These factories made weapons for the army.
Awards and Special Honors
Charles Younghusband was recognized for his scientific work. On June 3, 1852, he became a fellow of the Royal Society. This is a very old and respected group of scientists in the United Kingdom. Being a fellow means he was chosen as one of the best scientists. He was also a Companion of The Most Honourable Order of the Bath (CB), which is a special award for military service.
Personal Life
On April 2, 1825, Charles Younghusband married Mary Elizabeth Jones. They were married in Brockville, Ontario, Canada. Mary Elizabeth was the daughter of Jonas Jones, who was a judge and a politician.
Charles and Mary Elizabeth had a son named Frank Campbell Younghusband. Frank was born on January 7, 1851, and he also became an Army officer. He passed away on May 16, 1894.
Charles Younghusband's nephew was Lieutenant-Colonel Sir Francis Younghusband. Francis became a famous explorer.
