Charles de Kermovan de Gouzillon was a brave officer in the French Navy. He played a part in the War of American Independence, a big conflict where America fought for its freedom.

Who Was Charles de Gouzillon?

Charles de Gouzillon was the first son in his family. He had a brother, Andrée-Marie de Gouzillon de Bélizal, who also became a high-ranking officer called a "Chef de Division." His cousin, Jean-Michel-Guillaume de Gouzillon, was also a Lieutenant in the Navy.

Starting His Navy Career

Charles began his journey in the Navy on 4 July 1754. He joined as a Garde-Marine, which was a special rank for young officers in training. It was like going to a naval academy to learn how to command ships.

Rising Through the Ranks

Charles worked hard and moved up in the Navy.

  • On 1 February 1770, he was promoted to Lieutenant. This meant he was a junior officer, helping to lead a ship.
  • In 1778, he became the first officer on a large warship called the Éveillé. This ship had 64 cannons! He served under Captain du Botderu. Their ship was part of a bigger group of ships, called a squadron, led by Admiral Orvilliers.

Leading a Ship in Battle

On 4 April 1780, Charles de Gouzillon was promoted again, this time to Captain. This was a very important role, as he would now be in charge of his own warship.

The Battle of the Saintes

As a Captain, he commanded another 64-gun ship, the Ardent. He led his ship into a major naval battle known as the Battle of the Saintes. This battle took place in 1782 during the War of American Independence. During the intense fighting, Captain Gouzillon was injured, showing his courage in leading his ship.

Retirement from Service

Charles de Gouzillon retired from the Navy on 6 March 1785. He had served his country with bravery and dedication for many years.
