Charlie's Early Football Journey
Charlie Curnow started playing football at a high level when he was younger. He played for the Geelong Falcons in the TAC Cup, which is a competition for talented young players. During this time, he showed he was a strong forward with great stamina.
Getting Drafted by Carlton
Even though he had some injuries, Charlie was seen as a top player for the 2015 AFL draft. The Carlton Football Club chose him with their third pick, which was the twelfth pick overall. This was exciting because Charlie's older brother, Ed Curnow, was already playing for Carlton.
Charlie's AFL Career Highlights
Charlie Curnow made his first appearance in the AFL in 2016. His debut game was in Round 2 against the Sydney at Docklands Stadium. He quickly showed his skills, getting the ball often and kicking his first goal in that game.
Rising Star Nomination
In 2017, Charlie was nominated for the AFL Rising Star award. This award celebrates the best young players in the league. He finished fourth overall in the voting, showing how much potential he had.
Breakout Season and New Contract
Charlie had a fantastic year in 2018. He finished third in Carlton's best and fairest award, the John Nicholls Medal. He also became the club's top goalkicker, scoring 34 goals that season. Because of his great performance, he signed a new four-year contract with Carlton, staying with the club until 2023.
Overcoming Injuries
In 2019, Charlie kicked a career-high seven goals in one game against the Western Bulldogs. However, he then faced some tough times with injuries to his right knee. These injuries kept him off the field for a long time. He worked hard to recover and finally returned to play in Round 20 of the 2021 season.
Winning the Coleman Medal
Charlie made an amazing comeback in the 2022 AFL season. He played every game and won his first Coleman Medal by kicking 64 goals! This was a special achievement because his teammate, Harry McKay, had won the medal the year before. They were the first players from the same team to win the award in back-to-back years since 1900-1901. After this successful season, Charlie signed a big six-year contract, keeping him at Carlton until 2029.
Another Coleman Medal and Career Best
In 2023, Charlie continued his incredible form. He kicked a career-high nine goals in a game against West Coast. Later that season, he broke his own record by kicking an amazing 10 goals against West Coast again! He was the first Carlton player to kick 10 goals in a game since Stephen Kernahan in 1995. Charlie won his second Coleman Medal in a row, finishing the season with 78 goals.
