Charline White (born September 1, 1920 – died September 7, 1959) was a very important person in Michigan's history. She was the first African-American woman ever elected to the Michigan Legislature. This means she was the first Black woman to help make laws for the state of Michigan!
Early Life and Education
Charline White was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on September 1, 1920. When she was about three years old, in 1923, her family moved to Detroit, Michigan.
She went to school in Detroit and graduated from Cass Technical High School. After high school, she continued her education. She attended both Wayne State University and Poro College.
Personal Life
Charline White married LeRoy G. White around 1947. They were married for a few years before they divorced in 1953.
Her Career in Politics
Before becoming a politician, Charline White was a businesswoman. She owned and managed both an advertising business and a floral business.
In 1950, Charline White decided to run for office. She was elected to the Michigan House of Representatives. This is a group of people who represent different areas of Michigan and help create laws. She represented the 1st District of Wayne County. She officially started her job on January 3, 1951.
Charline White was a member of the Democratic Party. She was re-elected to represent the 1st District several times. Then, in November 1954, she was elected to represent the 11th District of Wayne County. She started this new role on January 12, 1955. She won re-election for this position two more times.
Charline White was still serving in office when she passed away on September 7, 1959. Her work helped open doors for many others in politics.
