The History of Charloe

Charloe has an interesting past that goes back many years.

Early Beginnings

Long before Charloe became a community, the land was home to an Ottawa Indian village. The community of Charloe was actually named after a respected Native American chief called Charloe Peter. This shows the deep roots the area has with its original inhabitants.

Once a County Capital

Did you know Charloe was once a very important place? In the 1840s, Charloe served as the county seat for Paulding County. A county seat is like the capital city for a county; it's where the main government offices and courts are located. However, in 1851, Charloe lost this important role to the nearby town of Paulding. After that, Charloe became much smaller and less central to the county's activities.

The Post Office Story

A post office was opened in Charloe in 1840. This was a vital service, allowing people to send and receive letters and packages. The post office served the community for many years, but it eventually closed down in 1905.
