The Charlotte City Council is like the main decision-making group for the city of Charlotte. They work with the city's manager in a system called a council–manager government. This means the Council makes the big rules, and a city manager handles the day-to-day running of the city.
The Council has eleven members and the Mayor. All of them are chosen by voters every two years. Four Council Members are elected from the whole city (this is called at-large). The other seven members represent specific areas, or districts, within Charlotte. Even though the Mayor is elected separately, they lead the City Council meetings. If the Mayor isn't there, a person called the Mayor Pro Tem steps in to lead. This person is chosen by the other City Council members.

How City Council Members Are Elected
City Council members are chosen by voters in elections held every two years. These elections help decide who will represent the people of Charlotte.
Some members are elected "at-large," meaning everyone in the city can vote for them. Other members are elected from specific "districts," so only people living in that district can vote for their representative. This system makes sure that different parts of the city have a voice on the Council.
The most recent elections were held in November 2023. Before that, elections took place in 2022, which were a bit delayed. They were originally planned for 2021 but were moved so that the city could use new population numbers from the 2020 U.S. Census to update the voting districts.
