The Charlotte City Council is like the city's main decision-making team. It's the group that makes laws and rules for the city of Charlotte. This council works with a city manager, which means the council sets the goals, and the city manager helps carry them out.
The Council has eleven members and the Mayor. All of them are chosen by voters every two years. Four of the Council Members are elected from the whole city (this is called "at-large"). The other seven members represent specific areas, or "districts," within Charlotte.
Even though the Mayor is elected separately, they lead the City Council meetings. The Council also chooses a "Mayor Pro Tem" from among its members. This person steps in to lead meetings if the Mayor is away. They also become the acting Mayor if the Mayor can no longer do their job.

The election that was supposed to happen in 2021 was moved to 2022. This change happened because of a state law. It allowed cities to update their election areas based on new population numbers from the 2020 U.S. Census.
