Charlotte Mata Rascála (born 1919, died 1989) was a famous Mexican sculptor. She became known as Charlotte Yazbek after marrying José Yazbek.

Charlotte was born in Puebla, Mexico, in 1919. Her family came from Lebanon. She lived with her father because her mother passed away when Charlotte was young. After her first marriage ended, she met and married José Yazbek.

Becoming an Artist

Charlotte started studying art in 1957 with a teacher named Uxio Souto. Later, she learned about artistic anatomy (the study of the human body for art) from Hermilio Castañeda. She also had other great teachers. Pedro Medina Guzman and Manuel Giner de los Rios taught her drawing and painting. Mathias Goeritz taught her art history.

Her Art Shows

Charlotte had her very first art show in 1960. Two years later, in 1962, she had her first show where only her own artwork was displayed.

Her sculptures even caught the eye of the Mexican president, Adolfo López Mateos. He praised her work! Seventeen of her sculptures were shown at the 1964 New York World's Fair. This was a huge honor.

Worldwide Fame

Because of her success at the World's Fair, Charlotte Yazbek became famous around the world. She held more than 100 exhibitions of her art in many different countries.

Many books and magazine articles were written about her work. There was even a film documentary made about her life as an artist.

Charlotte Yazbek passed away in 1989. She left behind many beautiful sculptures. You can still see her artwork in public places today. For example, there's the Parque de las Esculturas (Sculpture Park) in Cuautitlán Izcalli. There's also the Charlotte Yazbek Plaza in Mexico City's Bosque de Chapultepec.
