Charterhouse to Eashing is a really special natural area, about 68.4 hectares (that's like 170 football fields!) located west of Godalming in Surrey. It's officially known as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, or SSSI for short, because it's home to unique plants and animals.

What Makes This Place Special?

Charterhouse to Eashing is a beautiful valley with steep sides. This valley was carved out by water flowing through a wide, flat area called a flood plain.

Diverse Habitats

A big part of this SSSI is covered in woods, which are home to many different trees and creatures. But it's not just trees! You can also find areas of:

  • Tall Fen: These are wet, grassy areas with special plants that love damp soil.
  • Grassland: Open fields where different types of grasses and wildflowers grow.
  • Standing Water: Ponds or small lakes that provide a home for water-loving plants and animals.

Amazing Insects You Can Find Here

This area is especially famous for its amazing insect life, particularly its diverse population of flies. Some of these flies are very rare and hard to find anywhere else!

Here are a few of the unique flies that live at Charterhouse to Eashing:

  • Lonchoptera scutellata cranefly: This is a special type of cranefly.
  • Stratiomys potamida: A fascinating soldier fly.
  • Gonomyia bifida: Another rare cranefly species.

Scientists study these rare insects to learn more about them and to make sure their habitats are protected.
