The Chateau Crillon Apartment House is a really old and tall building in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It's also known by other names like the Cohen Apartment House or the Rittenhouse 222 Apartments. This historic building is located in the stylish Rittenhouse Square area of the city.

Building History and Design

This amazing building is 27 stories tall! It was designed by a famous architect named Horace Trumbauer. The building was finished in 1928.

What Does it Look Like?

The Chateau Crillon was built in a special style called Lombardic Romanesque. This style often uses brick and has decorative arches. It might have been inspired by another tall building, the Shelton Hotel in New York City. As the building goes up, it has "setbacks" on the 17th and 24th floors. This means the building gets a bit narrower at those levels.

Who Built It?

The person who developed this building was Louis H. Cahan. He also built several other well-known buildings in Philadelphia. These include the Locust Street Theater building, The Mitten Building (now called The Philadelphia Building), and The Mayfair House.

A Recognized Landmark

The Chateau Crillon Apartment House is considered a very important building. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. This is a list of places in the United States that are worth protecting because of their history. It was also added to the Philadelphia Register of Historic Places in 1982 and again in 1995.
