The Story of Chateau Woods

Becoming a Town

In the 1960s, people started building homes in an area called Lake Chateau Woods. Neighbors formed a group, like a community club. They wanted to make their area better. So, they decided to become an official town. This is called "incorporation."

On December 6, 1975, the people living there voted. They chose to become a village. The next year, they elected a mayor, Leon Kennedy. They also elected five "aldermen," who are like town council members. These leaders helped run the new village.

The new village used money from the state to build a big sewer system. This system helped manage waste water for homes. By 1980, about 590 people lived in Chateau Woods. The aldermen then voted to change its name from a "village" to a "city." By 1990, the population grew to 641 people.

Road Troubles and Changes

Even though Chateau Woods was a city, its roads were not paved. The local government tried to fix them with gravel. But the roads got bad every year. When it was dry, cars would kick up lots of dust. When it rained, the roads became muddy and hard to drive on.

City leaders wanted to pave the roads. But they decided to wait until the sewer system loans were paid off. If they paved the roads too soon, people would have to pay much higher taxes. People in the city became frustrated with the bad roads. They started to think it would be better to rejoin Montgomery County. This meant Chateau Woods would no longer be its own city.

In the early 1990s, people who supported this idea were elected to lead the city. On August 14, 1993, citizens voted to stop being an independent city. This is called "dis-incorporation." They then formed a Municipal Utility District (MUD). The MUD's job was to take care of the area's septic system. It also made sure the state was paid back for the sewer system. This happened several years later.

By the year 2000, about 1,091 people lived in the Chateau Woods area.
