La Virgen de Candelaria, en Tenerife, Patrona de las Islas Canarias, España
This image shows the Virgin of Candelaria, who is the patron saint of the Canary Islands. She is in the Basilica of Candelaria on the island of Tenerife.

Chaxiraxi was a very important goddess in the ancient religion of the Guanches. The Guanches were the first people to live on the Canary Islands. Chaxiraxi was known as the Sun Mother. She was one of the main goddesses in their group of gods, called a pantheon. People also connected her to the bright star called Canopus.

Historians believe the Guanches originally came from the Berbers of North Africa. Because of this, some think Chaxiraxi might be linked to an ancient goddess named Tanit. Tanit was worshipped by the Punic-Berber people. Chaxiraxi might have been a similar goddess but with a different name and story. She is also sometimes connected to the story of the Virgin of Candelaria. This story says the Virgin Mary appeared on the island of Tenerife around the year 1400, carrying her baby, Chijoraji.

Chaxiraxi Today

Today, Chaxiraxi is still important to some people. She is seen as the main goddess in a modern religion called the Church of the Guanche People. This group follows the ancient beliefs of the Guanches.
