History of the Checker Cab Building
Taxis first appeared in Detroit in the late 1800s. By the 1910s, car taxis were very common. Many taxi companies and independent drivers competed.
How Checker Cab Started
In 1921, some independent taxi drivers in Detroit teamed up. They called themselves the "Checker Taxicab Service." Later, they became the "Checker Cab Company." Checker Cab offered lower prices than others. They also let drivers own their own cabs. By 1922, Checker had 85 taxis. This number grew to 240 by 1924. In 1923, Checker Cab moved its offices into the General Motors Building.
The Detroit Cab Company
One of Checker's biggest rivals was the Detroit Cab Company. This company started in 1910. By the early 1920s, it was the largest taxi company in Detroit. In 1921, Detroit Cab bought land at Trumbull and Plum streets. They built several buildings there, including a garage and an office. In 1927, Detroit Cab built a new, bigger garage and office building. The Wisconsin Bridge and Iron Company designed this new building.
Checker Cab Takes Over
In 1929, the Checker Cab Company bought the Detroit Cab Company. By 1931, Checker Cab moved its main office. It left the General Motors Building and moved into the Trumbull facility.
The Great Depression caused many taxi companies to close. By the late 1930s, most taxis in Detroit were Checker Cabs. The company did well after World War II. It faced challenges in the 1970s and 1980s. However, it recovered and remained Michigan's largest taxi company into the 2010s. Checker Cab stayed in the Trumbull building until 2016. Then, they sold the building to be turned into loft apartments. The building was updated in 2018 as part of the Elton Park project.
What the Building Looks Like
The Checker Cab Building is a three-story building. It has a flat roof and is made of brick. It measures about 292 feet long and 124 feet wide. The building has a strong frame of steel and concrete. It is covered with red-brown bricks and cast concrete.
Main Entrance Area
The front of the building is balanced and has seven sections. The middle section is narrow. It has one window and a door on the first floor. The two sections next to it have two windows each. Above these three sections, there is a pointed top part. The other sections on each side have four or two windows. The sections with four windows have large garage doors on the first floor. Brick columns separate these sections. These columns have flat concrete bands at each floor level. The windows have concrete sills and brick designs above them.
Plum Street Side
The side of the building facing Plum Street is long, with thirteen sections. It is also made of red-brown brick. The three sections closest to Trumbull Street have three double-hung windows each. The rest of the sections have steel factory windows.
