Chedoke Creek facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Chedoke Creek is a small stream in the western part of Hamilton, Ontario. It flows through the city and crosses famous paths like the Bruce Trail and the Radial Trail.

About Chedoke Creek

Much of Chedoke Creek flows underground in concrete pipes. It is only a few meters wide at its widest points. The water is shallow enough for wading, but it is not safe to go into the water because of pollution.

The amount of water flowing in the creek changes with the seasons. The most water flows during the spring when snow and ice melt.

Water Quality and Health

Scientists have studied the creek's water as part of an educational program. This program was led by Dr. George Sorger from McMaster University and involved students from Westdale Secondary School. They looked at the creek's biodiversity, which means the variety of living things in the water.

Biodiversity helps show how healthy a water system is. If there isn't much variety of life, it often means there is pollution. Tests done by the students found high levels of E. coli. This means the water is not safe for people or pets.

The Waterfalls

Chedoke Creek has two waterfalls, known as Chedoke Falls. They flow over the Niagara Escarpment, which people in Hamilton call "The Mountain." Both waterfalls are in a park area called The Mountain Brow.

The larger waterfall is hidden away. It is near the east entrance of the Chedoke Civic Golf Course. To reach it, you need to hike along a steep valley. This area has bright red clay soil and many maple trees.

The other waterfall, called the Western Falls, is easier to see. You can spot it from the Radial Trail. This trail is a gravel path for walking and biking, but not for cars. It's just west of the Upper Paradise Street stairs and the Chedoke clubhouse.

After the waterfalls, the creek goes under the Radial Trail. It then flows through a thin forest between the golf course and nearby houses. At Glenside Avenue, about 500 meters from the Radial Trail, the creek goes underground again. It flows through a concrete channel next to Highway 403. Finally, it empties into Cootes Paradise at Princess Point Park.
