Early Life and Career
Chen Danyan started writing articles for magazines in China in the 1970s. She studied Chinese literature at East China Normal University from 1978 to 1982. After she finished college, she worked as an editor for a magazine called Children's Epoch. This magazine was for young people.
Writing for Young People
In the mid-1980s, Chen Danyan began to write about the feelings and lives of teenage girls. Her book Nine Lives (published in 1992) is a story about her own childhood. It talks about her experiences during a difficult time in China's history.
Nine Lives was very popular. It won the UNESCO-Prize for Peace and Tolerance. It was also nominated for the German Youth Literature Prize in 1996.
