Where to Find the Museum
Chepstow Museum is in a great spot. It's right in the middle of town, across the street from the famous Chepstow Castle. You can find it on Bridge Street, very close to the River Wye.
The Story of Gwy House
The museum is inside a beautiful old building called Gwy House. This house was built a long time ago, in 1796. A rich businessman named Warren Jane, who sold medicines and other goods, first owned it.
Over the years, Gwy House had many different uses.
- In 1907, it became a high school for girls.
- During World War I, it was used as a Red Cross hospital. This means it helped care for injured soldiers.
- In 1921, it changed into the Chepstow District Hospital.
- Finally, in 1982, it was turned into the town's museum. Even today, the building still has many of its original old features inside.
What You Can See Inside
The museum has lots of interesting things on display. These items tell the story of Chepstow. You can learn how Chepstow grew into an important trading port from medieval times. It was also a key town in the Marches, which was the border area between Wales and England.
Chepstow's Artistic Connections
The museum also shows how Chepstow's beautiful location in the Wye Valley attracted many famous poets and painters. They came to the area to find inspiration for their work.
In 2010, the museum had a special art show. It was called 'The Wye Tour and its Artists'. This exhibition showed old paintings from people who traveled along the River Wye. The museum even published a book about the art and the Wye Tour.
