Cheraw is a small place in Marion County, Mississippi, United States. It is called an unincorporated community. This means it's a settled place that doesn't have its own local government, like a city or town. Instead, it's governed by the county.

History of Cheraw

Cheraw was officially started in 1905. It got its name from a town called Cheraw, South Carolina. That town, in turn, was named after the Cheraw Native American tribe.

Early Settlers

It is believed that Reverend Isom Pounds and Margaret Parker Pounds helped start the community. They moved to the area in the early 1800s after they got married. They came from Cheraw, South Carolina, bringing the name with them.

Transportation and Communication

Cheraw is located along the Canadian National Railway. Railways were very important in the past for moving goods and people. This connection would have helped the community grow.

A post office also served the community of Cheraw. It was open from 1905 until 1925. Post offices were key for sending letters and packages, connecting people to the outside world.
