Laila Boonyasak (born September 15, 1982), who used to be known as Chermarn Boonyasak, is a famous actress from Thailand. She is often called by her nickname, Ploy. She is best known for her role as June/Tang in the movie The Love of Siam.
Her performance in that film was so good that she won two big awards: a Suphannahong National Film Award and a Bangkok Critics Assembly Award for Best Supporting Actress.
Ploy has also starred in other popular movies. She played the main ghost character in the scary but funny films Buppah Rahtree and Buppah Rahtree Phase 2: Rahtree Returns. She also appeared in the movie Last Life in the Universe with her real-life older sister, Daran Boonyasak.
Early Life and Education
Chermarn Boonyasak was born in Bangkok, Thailand. Her father, Sirisak Boonyasak, was a high-ranking officer in the navy, and her mother is Thanyada Nilphirom. Her parents separated when she was young. Ploy and her older sister, Daran, were raised by their mother and grandmother.
For school, Ploy went to St. Joseph Rayong School for her primary education. She later attended Joan of Arc School and Bodindecha (Sing Singhaseni) School in Bangkok. After high school, she earned a degree in Business Administration from Lumnamping College. She also received a degree in Communication Arts from Assumption University.
Career Highlights
Ploy began her acting career in 1993 and has been active ever since. Besides acting, she has also worked on important causes. In 2014, she worked with the UN Refugee Agency to help raise awareness for World Refugee Day.
She also became a well-known TV personality. Ploy was a mentor on the popular reality show The Face Thailand for its first season and returned for the fourth season, called The Face Thailand All Stars.
Political Views
Like many citizens, Ploy has shown interest in her country's politics. At one time, she supported a political group called the PDRC and its leader, Prayut Chan-o-cha.
However, her views changed over time. During the COVID-19 pandemic in Thailand, she began to speak out against Prayut's government. She also showed support for the large protests that took place in Thailand in 2020 and 2021.
