Cherokee Bluffs is a small place in Tallapoosa County, Alabama, United States. It's called an unincorporated community, which means it's not an official city or town.
The bluffs (steep cliffs) here were a very important landmark. They were chosen as the first spot on the Tallapoosa River to build a big dam and create a reservoir (a large lake for storing water).

Building Martin Dam
A New Community Forms
The famous Martin Dam was built right here at Cherokee Bluffs. Its construction finished in 1939. Building such a big dam needed many workers.
So, a whole community grew up around the construction site. It had everything the workers needed. There were places to sleep called bunkhouses.
Life at the Dam Site
Workers could use bathhouses and eat at a dining hall. There was also a commissary, which is like a store. For fun, they had a recreation hall.
If anyone got sick, there was a camp hospital. There was even a barber shop for haircuts!
Health and Safety
To keep everyone safe and healthy, workers had health checks. They were tested for certain illnesses. If someone tested positive, they couldn't be hired. Local people living nearby also had these health checks.
Famous People from Cherokee Bluffs
Cherokee Bluffs is also known as the birthplace of Roy C. Craven. He later became the first director of the University Gallery at the University of Florida.
