Cheryl Day (born in 1961) is a famous baker and author. She owns a popular bakery called Back in the Day Bakery in Savannah, Georgia. Cheryl also helped start an important group called Southern Restaurants for Racial Justice.
She has written two best-selling cookbooks with her husband, Griff Day. In 2015, she was recognized as a semi-finalist for the James Beard Awards. This award is a big honor for chefs and bakers.

Cheryl Day was born in 1961. Her family has a long history of baking. Her great-great-grandmother, Hannah Queen Grubbs, was a very skilled pastry chef. She was known for her amazing pies and frostings. Cheryl feels that this family connection makes her own baking work even more special.
Cheryl learned to bake from her grandmother. She spent summers with her grandmother in Alabama, learning many baking secrets. In 2002, Cheryl opened her own bakery, Back in the Day Bakery. She runs the bakery with her husband, Griff.
Best-Selling Cookbooks
Cheryl and Griff Day have written two cookbooks together. Both books have become very popular.
Their first book was called The Back in the Day Bakery Cookbook. It was published in 2012. This book became a New York Times best-seller.
Their second book, Back in the Day Bakery Made with Love, came out in 2015. This book shares many of the bakery's most loved recipes. Some popular recipes include Alabama Lane Cake, Coca-Cola Cake, and caramel cake.
Awards and Recognition
In 2015, Cheryl Day was a semi-finalist for the James Beard Awards. This award is like the "Oscars" for the food world. She was nominated in the "Outstanding Baker" category.
In 2016, a writer named Cathy Barrow praised Cheryl's buttermilk biscuits. She wrote in the Washington Post that they were the best in Savannah. Cheryl's bakery makes hundreds of these delicious biscuits by hand every single day.
Supporting the Community
In March 2020, Back in the Day Bakery had to close for a while. This was due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, it reopened in June 2020. The bakery started offering walk-up service and even nationwide delivery for some treats.
In July 2020, the bakery received a special prize. Discover Card gave them $25,000 to support Black-owned businesses.
Cheryl Day also helped create Southern Restaurants for Racial Justice (SRRJ). She co-founded it with Lisa Marie Donovan and Sarah O’Brien. This group works to support and help workers of color in the food industry.
