Cheryl Jones (born May 3, 1964) is an American former professional tennis player. She was known for her skills in doubles tennis.
About Cheryl Jones
Cheryl Jones played tennis for her college team, the USC Trojans, in 1983 and 1984. After college, she became a professional tennis player.
Her Tennis Career
As a doubles player, Cheryl Jones was very good. She reached a world ranking of 91, which means she was among the top 100 doubles players globally. She won one major title on the WTA Tour. This win happened at the 1987 Brasil Open in December 1987. She teamed up with another American player, Katrina Adams, to win the doubles championship.
In 1988, Cheryl Jones played in the main doubles events at three of the biggest tennis tournaments in the world. These are called Grand Slams. She competed at the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open.
Coaching Tennis
After her playing career, Cheryl Jones became a tennis coach. From 1989 to 1995, she was the head coach for the women's tennis team at the USC Trojans. This was the same college team she played for earlier. She made history as the first African-American woman to coach a top-level college tennis team in the NCAA Division I.
