Cheryl Jones played college tennis for the USC Trojans. She was part of their team in 1983 and 1984. After college, she became a professional tennis player.
She was especially good at playing doubles. This is where two players team up against another pair. Cheryl reached a world ranking of 91 in doubles. This was a great achievement for her.
In 1987, she won a big tournament. It was called the 1987 Brasil Open. She won this title with her partner, Katrina Adams. This was her only title on the WTA Tour.
In 1988, Cheryl played in some of the biggest tennis tournaments. These are called Grand Slams. She competed in the women's doubles at the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open.
Coaching Career
After her playing career, Cheryl Jones became a tennis coach. From 1989 to 1995, she was the head coach. She coached the women's tennis team for the USC Trojans. This was the same team she played for in college.
Cheryl Jones made history as a coach. She was the first African-American woman to coach an NCAA Division I tennis team. NCAA Division I is the highest level of college sports in the United States. This was a very important step for women and for diversity in sports.
