Island Facts
The largest island in the group is called Nukuwaiata Island. It is located to the southwest. This island is quite tall, reaching up to 247 meters high. That's almost as tall as a 80-story building!
The second main island is Te Kakaho Island. It is found to the northeast. Te Kakaho Island is also quite high, reaching 179 meters. The other two islands in the group are very tiny.
A Home for Nature
All of the Chetwode Islands are a special place. They are a nature reserve. This means the islands are protected by law. People work hard to keep the plants and animals safe here. Nature reserves help to protect unique wildlife and plants. They make sure these special places stay wild and untouched.
Who Were They Named After?
The Chetwode Islands got their name a long time ago. They were named after a person called Lieutenant Chetwode. He was an acting commander. He worked on a ship called the HMS Pelorus in 1838. This ship was a type of warship known as a brig-sloop.
