Chevrolet Suburban facts for kids
The Chevrolet Suburban is a really big and strong vehicle made by Chevrolet. It's known as a full-size SUV. What's super cool about the Suburban is that it's been made since 1935! That makes it the longest-running car nameplate still in production today.
When it first came out, it was more like a station wagon – a car with a long back for lots of passengers or cargo. Later, it changed into the SUV we know today. For many years, the Chevrolet Suburban was the biggest SUV you could buy in America.
Up until its eleventh version, the Chevrolet Suburban was built on the same base as the Chevrolet Silverado pick-up truck. This meant they shared many parts and designs. There was also a GMC Suburban, which was a similar vehicle made by GMC. However, GMC later changed its name to the GMC Yukon XL in 2000.
Between 1998 and 2001, a special version of the Suburban was made in Mexico. This version had the steering wheel on the right side, which is needed for countries like Australia and New Zealand. It was sold there by a company called Holden, but it wasn't very popular and was stopped after a few years.
Since it first started, there have been twelve different versions, or "generations," of the Suburban. The newest one was first shown in September 2013 and went on sale in February 2014 as a 2015 model. This new model was also the first time the Suburban didn't share the exact same design as the Silverado truck.
