The Albert City Station was an important train station built in 1899 in Albert City, Iowa. It was part of the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad, often called "The Milwaukee Road." This station helped connect farms in the area by moving both people and goods. Today, it is recognized as a historic place.

Albert City's Historic Train Station

The Chicago, Milwaukee and Pacific Railroad-Albert City Station, also known as the Albert City Depot, was built in 1899. It was constructed by a big train company called the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad. People often called this company "The Milwaukee Road."

Why Was the Station Built?

The station was built to help the farms around Albert City, Iowa. In 1899, The Milwaukee Road built a train line from Des Moines to Spencer, Iowa. This line was important for local farming. Albert City itself was planned and built in the same year. The depot was used for both passenger trains and freight trains.

How Was the Station Designed?

The Albert City Depot was a rectangular building made of wood. It had two main parts. One part was two stories tall. On the ground floor, there was a waiting room for passengers and an office for the station agent. The station agent's apartment was on the second floor.

Attached to this two-story section was a single-story part. This smaller section was used as a freight room to store goods. A large bay window stuck out from both the agent's office and the upstairs apartment. This allowed the agent to see clearly up and down the train tracks.

Moving to a New Home

In 1977, the train depot and the land around it were sold. A company wanted to build a large grain elevator there. But the town of Albert City and the local historical society wanted to save the old station.

So, they bought the depot. They then moved it to a new spot. It is now located right next to the historical society's museum.

A Historic Landmark

The Albert City Depot is very special. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list of important places in the United States. The depot was added to this list because it played a big part in how Albert City grew and developed.
