What the Chief Justice Does
The Chief Justice has many important jobs. These jobs help make sure justice is fair in Malta.
Leading the Justice System
- The Chief Justice helps lead a special group called the Commission for the Administration of Justice of Malta. This group makes sure judges and lawyers follow the rules.
- They are the head of the Court of Appeal. This court looks at decisions made by lower courts to make sure they are correct.
- They also lead the Court of Criminal Appeal. This court checks decisions in criminal cases.
- The Chief Justice is in charge of the Constitutional Court. This court makes sure that all laws follow Malta's Constitution, which is the country's main rulebook.
History of the Chief Justice
The role of Chief Justice in Malta has a long history. It started way back in 1814.
First Chief Justice
The very first Chief Justice of Malta was Sir Giuseppe Borg Olivier. He took on this important role in 1814.
How a Chief Justice is Chosen
The President of Malta chooses the Chief Justice. Once chosen, a Chief Justice usually serves until they turn 65 years old. They can also leave the job if they decide to resign.
Current Chief Justice
Today, the Chief Justice of Malta is Dr. Joseph Azzopardi. He became the Chief Justice in 2018.
