Joseph Azzopardi was born on 8 April 1955 in Senglea, Malta. He is a very important person in Malta's public life. He used to be the Chief Justice of Malta, which is the highest judge in the country. Today, he works as the Commissioner for Standards in Public Life. This means he helps make sure that people in public jobs act fairly and honestly.
Who is Joseph Azzopardi?
Joseph Azzopardi has had a long and successful career in law and public service. He has held many important positions. These roles have helped shape how justice and public standards work in Malta.
Early Life and Education
Joseph Azzopardi studied at the University of Malta. In 1978, he became a Notary Public. This is a legal professional who prepares and certifies legal documents. The next year, in 1979, he earned his Doctor of Laws degree. This is a high-level law degree. In 1980, he was the first president of the Federation of Maltese Youth Organizations.
A Career in Law
From 1980, Joseph Azzopardi worked as a private lawyer for 23 years. He mainly focused on Civil Law. This part of law deals with the rights and duties of people. He also worked on Matrimonial Law, which is about marriage and family matters. He gave advice to several organizations, including Lohombus Corporation and the Malta Public Transport Authority.
Important Roles
Joseph Azzopardi has held many key positions throughout his career.
- From 1981 to 1987, he was a director at the Mid Med Bank.
- He was a member of the Housing Authority Board from 1997 to 2003. This board helps with housing issues.
- He also served as a Commissioner of Justice from 1997 to 2003.
- He chaired different disciplinary boards, including those at Maltacom and the Malta Freeport Corporation.
- From 1996 to 2000, he was a member of the Committee of the Chamber of Advocates. This is a group for lawyers. He then became its President until 2003.
- As President, he was also a member of the Commission for the Administration of Justice of Malta.
In 2003, Prime Minister Eddie Fenech Adami appointed him as a Judge of the Superior Courts. He led the Family Section of the Civil Courts. In April 2018, at 63 years old, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat appointed him as the Chief Justice of Malta. He retired from this role on 8 April 2020, when he turned 65.
Joseph Azzopardi also taught Civil Law at the University of Malta. On 8 March 2023, he was appointed Commissioner for Standards in Public Life. He took over this role from Dr George Marius Hyzler.
He is married and has one daughter.
