Joseph Azzopardi was born on April 8, 1955, in Senglea, Malta. He is an important person in Malta's government. Currently, he works as the Commissioner for Standards in Public Life. Before this, he was the Chief Justice of Malta from 2018 to 2020.

Who is Joseph Azzopardi?
Joseph Azzopardi studied at the University of Malta. He became a Notary Public in 1978 and a lawyer (Doctor of Laws) in 1979. In 1980, he was the first president of a group called the Federation of Maltese Youth Organizations.
Early Career as a Lawyer
For 23 years, starting in 1980, Mr. Azzopardi worked as a private lawyer. He mostly helped people with family law and civil law cases. He also gave advice to big companies like the Malta Public Transport Authority.
He was a director at Mid Med Bank from 1981 to 1987. From 1997 to 2003, he was on the Housing Authority Board. He also served as a Commissioner of Justice during this time. Mr. Azzopardi led different disciplinary boards, including those at Maltacom and the Malta Freeport Corporation.
From 1996 to 2000, he was a member of the Chamber of Advocates. He then became its President until 2003. As President, he was also part of the Commission for the Administration of Justice of Malta.
Becoming a Judge
On May 23, 2003, Prime Minister Eddie Fenech Adami chose Joseph Azzopardi to be a Judge in the Superior Courts. He was in charge of the Family Section of the Civil Courts.
In April 2018, when he was 63, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat appointed him as the Chief Justice of Malta. He was seen as a good choice for the role. He retired from this position on April 8, 2020, when he turned 65.
Other Roles and Contributions
Mr. Azzopardi has also taught Civil Law at the University of Malta. He once ran for election as a Labour candidate, but he did not win.
In October 2019, during a speech, he talked about how easy it is to criticize judges. He said that judges cannot always respond to questions from journalists.
On March 8, 2023, Joseph Azzopardi was chosen for a new important job. He became the Commissioner for Standards in Public Life. He took over from Dr. George Marius Hyzler in this role.
Mr. Azzopardi is married and has a daughter.
