The Chief Justice is a very important person in Sri Lanka's government. They make sure that laws are followed fairly for everyone. This role helps keep justice strong in the country.
What Does a Chief Justice Do?
The Chief Justice leads the judiciary of Sri Lanka. This means they are in charge of all the courts and judges. They oversee how justice is carried out. The Chief Justice also leads the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka. This court makes final decisions on legal cases. There are ten judges in the Supreme Court. The Chief Justice is one of them. The other nine are called Puisne Justices.
How is the Chief Justice Chosen?
Becoming the Chief Justice is a careful process. First, the Constitutional Council suggests a person for the job. This council is a group that helps make sure important government roles are filled fairly. After the council suggests someone, the President officially appoints them. The person chosen must be a highly respected and experienced judge.
History of This Important Role
The position of Chief Justice in Sri Lanka is very old. It was first created in March 1801. This means the role has been around for over 200 years! The very first Chief Justice was a person named Codrington Edmund Carrington. Today, the 47th person to hold this important job is Jayantha Jayasuriya. He became the Chief Justice on April 29, 2019.
