The Children's and Family Emmy Awards are special awards given to the best TV shows and movies made for kids and families in America. They are part of the bigger Emmy Awards family, which celebrates amazing work in television.

These awards are given out by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS). They honor great acting, writing, directing, and many other things that make children's and family TV shows awesome. The very first awards show happened on December 10 and 11, 2022, in Los Angeles. Before these awards started, shows for kids used to get their awards at the Daytime Emmys or even the Primetime Emmys.

History of the Awards

For a long time, most TV shows for kids received their awards at the Daytime Emmy Awards. This was organized by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS). They even added a new award for "Outstanding Young Adult Series" in 2021.

The Primetime Emmy Awards also had an award for "Outstanding Children's Program." But this award was a bit different. It wasn't a competition where only one show won. Instead, several shows could get the award if enough judges liked them. This award stopped in 2020. This was because more and more shows were appearing on streaming services like Netflix or Disney+. It became confusing whether a kids' show should be judged with daytime shows or primetime shows.

To make things clearer, on November 17, 2021, NATAS announced something new! They decided to create a brand-new award show just for children's and family TV. This new show would be called the Children's and Family Emmy Awards. It would bring together all the kids' and family categories that were spread out across the other Emmy shows.

NATAS said they created these new awards because there was "explosive growth" in how many great kids' and family shows were being made. The new awards also added seven new categories just for shows made for preschool children. This change was part of a bigger plan to make sure TV shows were judged based on their style and what they were about, not just when they aired on TV.
