Where to Find CAMON
The Children's Art Museum of Nepal is located in Kathmandu. You can find it northeast of the famous Durbar Marg street. The museum is on the top floor of a five-story building right in the middle of the city.
Who Started CAMON?
The founder of CAMON is Sneha Shrestha (artist). She studied art and global studies in college. After graduating, she worked with an organization called Artists for Humanity, helping young artists. Sneha wanted to create a lasting place where children in Nepal could explore art. Her idea for CAMON was to help kids appreciate their own culture and express themselves through hands-on art activities.
What CAMON Aims to Do
CAMON has important goals for children and art in Nepal:
- To be a main place for art and education in Nepal.
- To give children and young people creative ways to show their feelings.
- To make art a regular part of school education for kids.
Inside the Museum
The art museum has two main rooms in its 1,200 square foot space on the rooftop.
- The Exhibition Room: This room shows off art made by Nepali students during museum workshops. It also displays art from local artists and international friends. It works as a small art gallery and a place for quick art projects.
- The Education Room: This room has a small library and is the main spot for creative activities. It's like a "creativity lab" and has lots of art supplies for workshops.
The rooftop itself is a small living area called the "Cloud." Artists can stay here and work on their projects.
Fun Programs and Activities
CAMON offers many exciting programs and activities for children. According to Pranjali Singh, the Program Coordinator, kids can explore art freely. Many activities also focus on important social topics.
Even before the museum officially opened, Sneha Shrestha and her team started community outreach programs in 2013. Some of the activities included:
- Alphabet Workshops: Kids learned about and appreciated the unique Nepali alphabet.
- Winter Art Camps: Fun art activities during the winter season.
- "Wall of Hope" Mural: The CAM team, also known as the CAM crew, created this mural for a film and art festival. They also painted many other creative murals around Kathmandu.
How CAMON Gets Support
The museum gets most of its money from an online fundraising campaign called Indiegogo. This campaign raised a good amount of money to help start the museum. The founder also received a grant from the Advanced Leaders Fellowship, which helped fund the project.
