Music Journey
Starting with Flavor Unit
Chill Rob G began his music career with a group called Flavor Unit. This group included other talented artists. Some members were Lakim Shabazz, The 45 King, and Queen Latifah. They all worked together to create new hip hop sounds.
First Album: Ride the Rhythm
In 1987, Chill Rob G signed with Wild Pitch Records. He released his first album, Ride the Rhythm, with them. The album had a mix of strong, energetic songs. It also featured tracks with a relaxed, talking style. The Source magazine, a well-known hip hop publication, called it one of the 100 Greatest Rap Albums. This shows how important his first album was.
The Story of "The Power"
In 1989, Chill Rob G had a song called "The Power." A German music group named Snap! used parts of his song. They did this without his permission. Snap!'s version of "The Power" became a huge hit in Europe. Because of its popularity, Snap! later recorded a new version. They used a different singer for their official release.
Taking a Break
After his first album, Chill Rob G stepped away from the music scene. He mentioned that personal challenges made him take this break. He also hinted at some difficulties with his record label. This led to him being out of the spotlight for about ten years.
Black Gold and Other Works
Later, he recorded a second album called Black Gold. This album was with an independent label. However, it was not officially released for many years. Finally, it became available on iTunes on May 6, 2008.
In 1996, a British artist named Tricky covered Chill Rob G's song "Bad Dreams." This cover appeared on Tricky's album Pre-Millennium Tension.
Chill Rob G has continued to work on music over the years. In 2002, he appeared on DSP's album In the Red. He also recorded songs with other famous rappers. These include R.A. the Rugged Man, Treach from Naughty by Nature, and Chuck D from Public Enemy. He has worked with producers like Skamadix and the 45 King. He is still creating new music projects today.
