Chilling, Thrilling Sounds of the Haunted House is a special record album from Disneyland Records, which is now known as Walt Disney Records. It was made for older kids, teenagers, and adults. This album is mostly filled with cool sound effects. These sounds were collected by the sound effects team at Walt Disney Studios.

The album came out in a few different ways. It was first released in 1964 with a white cover. Then, it was released again in 1973 with an orange cover. Both versions had two sides. The first side had 10 exciting stories. A narrator named Laura Olsher told these stories, and they were full of amazing sound effects. The second side had 10 sound effects all by themselves. This was so listeners could make up their own stories using the sounds!

What Sounds Are on the Album?

Even though the album is called Chilling, Thrilling Sounds of the Haunted House, many of the sounds are not about ghosts or haunted places. Instead, you can hear all sorts of different situations. Imagine an ocean liner hitting rocks, or someone carefully crossing a shaky bridge. There's even the sound of a spaceship landing on Mars!

You'll also find tracks with lots of animal sounds. For example, there are sounds of cats, dogs, and birds. These animals seem to get very upset or angry for some reason. It's a bit like the movie The Birds!

The Album's Cool Art

The covers of the American albums show a painting made with acrylic paints. This artwork was created by an artist named Paul Wenzel. He actually designed this painting as an idea for the famous The Haunted Mansion ride at Disneyland. The original painting was quite large. It was sold at an auction in 2001.

The British version of the album had a real photo of the Haunted Mansion ride on its cover. Later, a 1979 album simply showed a colorful picture of a haunted house. It also featured ravens and a skeleton in a coffin.

How the Sounds Were Used by Others

Some of the stories and sounds from this album became famous in a new way. They were "sampled" in rap songs. Sampling means taking a small part of an existing song or sound and using it in a new song. For example, parts of the album were used in songs like N.W.A's "Quiet on Tha Set." Ice Cube also used sounds in his songs "Look Who's Burnin'" and "Jackin' for Beats."

In 1997, a band called Xero used a sound from the album. This band later became the famous rock band Linkin Park. They sampled "The Very Long Fuse" on their demo tape.

On Halloween, October 31, 2014, a rock band called Phish did something really cool. They performed the entire first side of Chilling, Thrilling Sounds of the Haunted House! They played their own original music to go along with the album's stories. This was part of their special "musical costume" for their Halloween concert in Las Vegas. After that show, their version of "Martian Monster" became a regular song they play at their concerts. They've performed it many times since!
