G10 to G99: These are also important national highways, but they might not be as long or connect as many major cities as the G1-G9 roads.
G100 to G999: These numbers are used for regional highways that connect smaller cities or specific areas within a province.
G1000 and above: These are often used for ring roads around big cities or for special connections.

The letter "G" stands for "Guodao," which means "National Road" in Chinese.

The "Five Verticals and Seven Horizontals" Plan

For a long time, China's main highway plan was called the "Five Verticals and Seven Horizontals." This meant there were five main roads running north-south and seven main roads running east-west across the country. This plan helped build a strong basic network.
