Chinyelu Bessum Asher is a talented professional soccer player. She was born in the United States on May 20, 1993. Chinyelu plays as a midfielder for USL Super League club DC Power FC. Even though she was born in the U.S., she plays for the Jamaican national team.

Early Life and Sports Beginnings
Chinyelu started playing soccer when she was 9 years old. Her father, Kevin Asher, who is from Jamaica, taught her how to play. Besides soccer, Chinyelu was also a great runner in high school. She competed in track and cross country, even going to national events and the Junior Olympics. At the same time, she played for a club team called Freestate United. She also practiced with her school's boys' soccer team.
College Soccer Journey
Chinyelu continued her soccer career in college. From 2011 to 2013, she played for the Purdue Boilermakers. After that, she moved to the Louisville Cardinals in 2014 for her final college season.
Professional Club Career
Chinyelu's professional journey began in 2016 when she joined BIIK-Kazygurt. She played in 7 matches of the 2016–17 UEFA Women's Champions League, which is a big European competition.
In 2017, she moved to Santa Fe in Colombia. Her team had a fantastic year, winning the 2017 season and the post-season tournament. She also played in all their games during the 2017 Copa Libertadores Femenina, a major South American club tournament.
In 2018, Chinyelu was invited to train with the Washington Spirit team. She later joined Stabæk in Norway in January 2019. She returned to the Washington Spirit on April 8, 2021.
More recently, on July 4, 2025, Chinyelu signed a contract with DC Power FC. This team plays in the USL Super League.
Playing for Jamaica
Even though Chinyelu was born in the United States, she was able to play for Jamaica because her father is Jamaican.
Youth National Team
Her first time playing for Jamaica was in 2012. She joined the Jamaica U-20 team for the 2012 CONCACAF Women's U-20 Championship.
Senior National Team
Chinyelu made her debut for the senior Jamaican national team on August 25, 2015. This was during a qualifying match for the 2016 CONCACAF Women's Olympic Qualifying Championship qualification against the Dominican Republic.
A big moment in her career was being chosen for Jamaica's team in the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup. She played in her first World Cup match against Brazil in Grenoble, France. Chinyelu has scored several goals for the Jamaican national team in various competitions.
Personal Life
Chinyelu's mother has roots in Cameroon, and her father is of Afro-Jamaican descent. Her father also played college soccer at Howard University. Chinyelu has an older brother named Daniel Asher, who played soccer at Saint Leo University. Chinyelu is the second youngest of five siblings in her family.
