History of Chocolate Day
Why Chocolate Day Started
National Chocolate Day in Ghana began in 2005. One important reason for starting this day was to encourage young people to show love to their friends and family in positive ways, like by giving gifts of chocolate. This was meant to shift their focus from other activities.
The idea for Chocolate Day came from the Ghana Tourism Authority working with the Cocoa Processing Company of Ghana. It was part of the "Ghana@50" celebrations, which marked 50 years of Ghana's independence. The Minister of Tourism at that time, Jake Obetsebi Lamptey, helped to start this event.
Promoting Cocoa Consumption
When Chocolate Day was first launched, the Minister pointed out that people in Ghana did not eat much cocoa, even though Ghana was the second largest producer of cocoa beans in the world. He hoped that creating this special day would encourage more Ghanaians to enjoy cocoa products. The ministry also mentioned plans to build a cocoa museum after the day was started.
