Chocolate Day, officially known as National Chocolate Day, is a special holiday celebrated in the country of Ghana. It takes place every year on February 14th, the same day as Valentine's Day.

This day was created by the Ghana Tourism Authority in 2005. The main goal is to encourage people in Ghana to enjoy their own country's delicious chocolate and other products made from cocoa beans. It also helps promote tourism within Ghana and offers a positive and healthy way to celebrate Valentine's Day.

The Story of Chocolate Day

The first National Chocolate Day was celebrated in Ghana in 2005. The government wanted to create a special day that focused on something important to the country's culture and economy: cocoa.

Why Was It Created?

The idea for Chocolate Day came from a partnership between the Ghana Tourism Authority and the Cocoa Processing Company of Ghana. At the time, Jake Obetsebi Lamptey was the Minister of Tourism. He helped launch the event as part of the Ghana@50 celebrations, which marked 50 years of the country's independence.

The creators of Chocolate Day had a few key goals:

  • Encourage eating local chocolate: At the time, Ghana was one of the world's top producers of cocoa beans, but not many Ghanaians ate chocolate products. The holiday was a fun way to change that.
  • Promote positive celebrations: The day was also meant to give young people a positive way to show they care for friends and family by giving a gift of chocolate.
  • Boost tourism: It was hoped that the celebration would encourage more people to travel within Ghana.

When the holiday was launched, the Minister of Tourism pointed out how strange it was that Ghana produced so much cocoa but consumed so little. He hoped the day would inspire Ghanaians to enjoy the tasty treats made right in their own country. There were also discussions about creating a cocoa museum to teach people more about Ghana's chocolate history.
