The Chorizandra enodis, also known as the black bristle rush or black bristle sedge, is a type of grass-like plant. It belongs to the Cyperaceae family, which includes many sedges. This plant is originally from Australia.

About the Black Bristle Rush

The black bristle rush is a plant that grows from underground stems called rhizomes. It is a perennial, meaning it lives for more than two years. This plant grows in loose clumps or tufts. It can reach a height of about 0.2 to 1 meter (0.7 to 3.3 feet). It can also spread out to about 1 meter (3.3 feet) wide.

When Does it Bloom?

This plant produces flowers between July and November. Its flowers are usually purple-brown or black.

What Do the Flowers Look Like?

The black bristle rush has a single flowerhead at the very top of its stem. This flowerhead is round and packed tightly with flowers. It measures about 7 to 15 millimeters (0.3 to 0.6 inches) across. A long leaf-like part, called a bract, wraps around the flowerhead. This bract can be up to 20 centimeters (7.9 inches) long and extends from the stem. The small leaves around the flowers have white hairs at their tips and red hairs along their edges.

Where the Black Bristle Rush Grows

This plant is found in several parts of Western Australia. It likes to grow in wet, swampy areas or places where water seeps out of the ground. You can find it along the coast in regions like the Mid West, Wheatbelt, South West, Great Southern, and Goldfields-Esperance. It prefers to grow in sandy-clay soils that contain a type of rock called laterite.
