Dr. Christopher Frank Atton (born March 10, 1959) is a retired professor who taught about media and culture. He worked at Edinburgh Napier University in Scotland.
Professor Atton is well-known for his work on Alternative Media. This means he studies news, music, and other media that are not controlled by big companies or governments. He looks at how these smaller, independent media groups work and how they can change what people think. His research also covers popular music, how creative businesses work, and teaching at universities. He has also written about censorship (when information is blocked) and media ethics (what is right and wrong in media).

Chris Atton's Education
Chris Atton earned his PhD in 1999. His PhD research was about alternative newspapers and magazines in Britain. He also has two Master's degrees. One is in Latin Studies from the University of Edinburgh. The other is in Mass Communications from the University of Leicester.
Chris Atton's Career Journey
Chris Atton started his career by translating old Latin texts from the Renaissance period. In 1985, he trained to be a librarian in Leeds. After working in public and college libraries for several years, he became a Science Librarian at Edinburgh Napier University in 1992.
He was recognized for his work in libraries. In 1995, he became a Fellow of the Library Association (UK). In 1998, he received the American Library Association's Jackie Eubanks Memorial Award. This award honored his great work in helping libraries share alternative media.
Later, Chris Atton became a Lecturer and then a Reader at the university. In 2007, he became a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. He was made a full Professor in October 2008. In 2010, he joined the Arts and Humanities Research Council's Peer Review College. This group helps decide which research projects get funding.
