What is the Christ Child Sculpture?
This sculpture is made from Portland stone, a type of rock often used for buildings in London. It shows a tiny, life-sized baby. Around the sculpture, there are words from the Gospel of John. These words say: "In the beginning was the word and the word became flesh and lived among us."
Why Was This Sculpture Created?
Artist Mike Chapman made this sculpture for the year 2000. This was a big celebration called the Millennium. He wanted to remind everyone about the true meaning of Christmas. He thought a small stone baby in a huge place like Trafalgar Square would be a great way to do this. The sculpture was carved from a very large, 4.5-tonne block of stone.
Where Can You See the Christ Child?
The sculpture is located under the entrance porch (portico) of St Martin-in-the-Fields church. This church is a famous landmark in Trafalgar Square. Trafalgar Square is a busy public space in central London. The sculpture is seen as a "strikingly modern" piece of art.
