About Christ Church: A Historic Building
Christ Church stands at the corner of Quincy and Elm Streets. It is just south of Quincy's main downtown area. The church is built from local granite stone. It has a roof made of slate that is very steep.
The Church's Design and Look
The front of the church has a large, arched stained glass window. The sides of the building have small supports called buttresses. Entryways stick out on both sides. This design makes the church look like old English country churches.
However, one part is different from those old churches. It does not have a rounded end section called an apse. Instead, that part of the church has a flat wall. A building called a parish house is connected to the back. It is also built from local granite. This house has heavy stone window sills and steep roof gables.
The Church's Long History
The church community officially began in 1704. This was when the area was still part of Braintree. Reverend William Barclay helped to organize it. The first church building was put up in 1727 on School Street. This is where the Christ Church Burial Ground is today.
A second church building was built at the current spot in 1832. It was made of wood. Then, a stone church was built there in 1859. Sadly, both of these buildings were destroyed by fire. The church you see today was built in 1874. It was designed in an English Revival style. This style was very popular for Episcopal churches at that time.
