Christ at the Column is a life-size sculpture made by the Spanish artist Gregorio Fernández. It was created around 1619. This amazing wooden statue shows Jesus tied to a column.
Gregorio Fernández was asked by a religious group, the Brotherhood of the Holy Cross, to create a special set of wooden statues. These statues were for a "paso", which is a large float used in religious parades. The original idea was for this sculpture of Christ to be part of a scene showing Jesus being whipped. However, by the mid-1600s, the sculpture became famous on its own.
This artwork is special because it mixes old art styles with very lifelike details. It also shows strong religious feelings.
