The Christ of the Ozarks is a very large statue of Jesus. It stands tall near Eureka Springs, Arkansas. You can find it on top of Magnetic Mountain. This huge statue was built in 1966. It was part of a special project called "Sacred Projects." The statue is about 65.5 feet (20 meters) high.

About the Statue's Creation

A man named Gerald L. K. Smith had the idea for this statue. He was a person who organized many public events. After many years of his work, he moved to Eureka Springs, Arkansas. There, he bought and fixed up an old house.

On his property, he planned to create a religious theme park. He called this big plan "Sacred Projects." The main part of his plan was a giant statue of Jesus. This statue was finished in 1966 and became known as Christ of the Ozarks.

Smith also built a large outdoor theater. It has seats for 4,100 people. This is where The Great Passion Play is performed. This play is like a famous show in Oberammergau, Germany. It tells the story of Jesus. The play is performed several nights a week. You can see it from early May until the end of October.

How the Statue Looks

The Christ of the Ozarks statue was mostly designed by Emmet Sullivan. He also worked on another nearby place called Dinosaur World. Mr. Sullivan even helped with the famous Mount Rushmore monument.

The statue has a simple and modern look. It does not have many small details on its face. The lines and shapes are very basic. The statue's arms are stretched straight out. This pose reminds people of the Crucifixion. However, there is no cross shown with the statue.
