A Look Back: The Christian Jipp Home & Grocery
Building a Business
The grocery store was finished in 1868. It was built by Christian Jipp, who had moved to America from what is now Germany. This store was one of the very first shops built on the bluff, which is a raised area, in Davenport.
Home and Store Combined
Christian Jipp, his wife, and their three daughters first lived right behind the store. In 1878, a house was added to the building. This gave the family more space. Christian Jipp ran the store until 1906.
Changes Over Time
The store stayed open until 1958. After that, it was changed into a place where people could do their laundry, called a laundromat. The house part of the building became a place that people could rent.
Saving a Historic Building
The building was empty for 20 years. In 2004, the city planned to tear it down. But a group called the Gateway Redevelopment Group stepped in. They got money from both private people and the government to save the building. They worked to make it strong again and then fixed it up.
Today, the building is home to the Architectural Rescue Shop. This shop collects, fixes, saves, and sells old parts from buildings. There is also an apartment on the second floor of the building.
