The Christian Science Society Building is a special old building in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada. It's located at 20 Chapel Street. This building is unique because it started as a home and later became a church.

History of the Building

This building was first built as a house sometime between 1900 and 1910. It was known as the McDonald Property back then. Imagine a family living there!

In 1932, the building got a big makeover. It was moved onto a new concrete foundation. Its outside walls were covered with a material called stucco. Inside, everything was changed to make it suitable for a church. This is a great example of "adaptive re-use," which means changing an old building to fit a new purpose.

Why is it Special?

The city of Nanaimo recognized this building as important. On October 7, 2002, they named it a local heritage site. This means it's a building with historical or architectural value that should be protected. Experts called it a "very good example of Classical Period Revival architecture," even if it's a simple version of that style.

What is it Today?

The Christian Science Society Building is still an active church today. It is listed in the Christian Science Journal, which is a publication for Christian Science churches around the world.
