Christian Stocker (born 20 March 1960) is an important Austrian politician. He became the 29th Chancellor of Austria in March 2025. The Chancellor is like the head of government in Austria.

Stocker is a member of the People's Party (ÖVP). He has been a member of the National Council since 2019. The National Council is Austria's main parliament. From January to March 2025, he was the acting leader of the People's Party. Before that, he was the party's general secretary from September 2022 to January 2025.

On 5 January 2025, Stocker became the acting leader of the People's Party. This happened after the previous Chancellor, Karl Nehammer, stepped down. After some talks, the People's Party, the Social Democratic Party (SPÖ), and NEOS agreed to form a new government. Christian Stocker was chosen to lead this government as Chancellor.

Early Life and Education

Christian Stocker was born and grew up in Wiener Neustadt, a city in Austria. His father, Franz Stocker, was also a politician for the ÖVP.

Stocker went to elementary and secondary school in Wiener Neustadt. He then studied law at the University of Vienna starting in 1979. He earned his master's degree in 1986 and a doctorate in law in 1988.

Political Journey

Christian Stocker started his journey in national politics on 12 June 2019. He became a member of the National Council. This is where laws are made in Austria.

In June 2021, he was re-elected as the head of the ÖVP in his hometown, Wiener Neustadt. Later, in December 2021, he became the spokesperson for internal affairs and security for his party in parliament.

In March 2022, Stocker was chosen as a deputy leader for his district party. In September 2022, he became the secretary-general of the ÖVP. This is an important role in managing the party. For the 2024 national elections, he was a top candidate in his area. He won enough votes to get a direct seat in parliament. After the election, he joined the team that talked about forming a new government.

On 5 January 2025, Stocker was appointed the leader of the ÖVP. This happened after the previous leader, Karl Nehammer, resigned. Stocker then led talks with the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ). These talks did not lead to a government agreement.

After local elections in Lower Austria in 2025, Stocker stepped down from his local roles in Wiener Neustadt. However, he remained the city's party chairman.

Becoming Chancellor of Austria

After more talks, the ÖVP, SPÖ, and NEOS decided to form a government together. Christian Stocker was chosen to be the new Chancellor. He officially became the Chancellor of Austria on 3 March 2025. He then formed his own government, known as the Stocker government.

On 29 March 2025, he was officially elected as the chairman of the ÖVP at a big party meeting. He received a very high percentage of the votes.
