Christian Stocker (born 20 March 1960) is an important Austrian politician. He has been the 29th chancellor of Austria since March 2025. The Chancellor is like the head of government in Austria.
Stocker is a member of the People's Party (ÖVP). He has also been a member of the National Council since 2019. The National Council is similar to a parliament where laws are made. From September 2022 to January 2025, he was the general secretary of his party. He became the acting leader of the People's Party on 5 January 2025.
After the 2024 election, different political parties tried to form a government. On 27 February 2025, the People's Party, the Social Democratic Party (SPÖ), and NEOS agreed to work together. They formed a new government with Christian Stocker as Chancellor.

Early Life and Education
Christian Stocker was born and grew up in Wiener Neustadt, a city in Austria. His father, Franz Stocker, was also a politician for the ÖVP.
Stocker went to elementary and secondary school in Wiener Neustadt. He then studied law at the University of Vienna starting in 1979. He earned his master's degree in 1986 and a doctorate in law in 1988.
Political Journey
Christian Stocker began his journey in national politics on 12 June 2019. He became a member of the National Council. This is where important decisions for the country are made.
In June 2021, he was re-elected as the leader of the ÖVP in his hometown, Wiener Neustadt. By December 2021, he became the spokesperson for internal affairs and security for his party in parliament.
Party Leadership Roles
In March 2022, Stocker was chosen as a deputy leader for his local party district. In September 2022, he was appointed as the secretary-general of the ÖVP. This is a key role in managing the party's daily work.
For the 2024 National Council elections, he was a top candidate in his region. He also secured a direct seat in parliament from his district. After the election, he joined the team that talked with other parties to form a new government.
On 5 January 2025, Christian Stocker became the acting Chairman of the ÖVP. This happened after the previous leader, Karl Nehammer, stepped down. Stocker then led new talks with other parties to try and form a government.
Becoming Chancellor
After more talks between the ÖVP, SPÖ, and NEOS, Christian Stocker was chosen to lead the new government. He was sworn in as the Chancellor of Austria on 3 March 2025. This means he became the head of the Austrian government.
On 29 March 2025, he was officially elected as the chairman of the ÖVP. He received a very high percentage of votes from party members.
As Chancellor, Stocker has spoken about important global issues. For example, in June 2025, he shared his concerns about the nuclear program in Iran. He said that Iran should not be allowed to get nuclear weapons. He also asked everyone to return to peaceful discussions.
