A Look Back: History of Christian Radio
Since the very beginning of radio broadcasting, some stations have shared Church services, sermons, and Christian music. One of the first experimental radio broadcasts on Christmas Eve included religious music played on a violin. By the 1920s, when radio became popular, Christian programs were quite common.
Different Kinds of Christian Radio
Christian radio can come in many different styles, just like regular radio stations. For almost every type of music or talk show you hear on regular radio, there's a Christian version!
Some popular Christian radio styles include:
- "Oldies": This plays traditional Christian music.
- Black Gospel: Features gospel music from African American artists.
- Southern Gospel: A style of gospel music popular in the Southern United States.
- Rock: Christian rock music.
- Talk: Programs that discuss Christian topics or news.
- Worship: Music and songs used in church worship.
- Sermons: Recordings of church sermons or teachings.
Many Christian stations also broadcast in languages other than the main language of their country. Because of all these different styles and languages, a big city might have many Christian radio stations, each offering something a little different!
Who Listens? Target Audiences
Some Christian radio stations aim to reach a specific group of people, like young people, older adults, or women.
Many stations create programs mainly for people who are already Christians. Others try to do evangelism, which means sharing the Christian message with people who might not be Christians yet. These stations often play music and programs that could attract new listeners.
How Christian Radio Stations Get Money
Many Christian stations operate as non-commercial stations. This means they don't usually sell advertisements. Instead, they get most of their money from listeners who donate. Sometimes, people or groups who want to support the station's message also donate.
Other stations operate as commercial stations. They play advertisements, just like regular radio, to cover their costs.
More and More Christian Stations
The number of radio stations in the U.S. that play Christian programs has grown a lot in recent years. This happened partly because some older AM stations couldn't compete as commercial stations. Christian groups bought them to run as non-commercial or semi-commercial Christian stations.
Also, new rules made it possible for more FM stations to start. In many countries that used to only have government-run radio, new rules allowed other groups to have their own stations. This has led to more Christian stations appearing outside the U.S. too.
Christian Radio Around the World
Many Christian stations operate with a special purpose: to be a missionary station. They broadcast the Christian message to countries and groups where many people are not Christians, or where Christians don't have much access to churches or teachings.
These "Missionary Radio" stations are different from stations that mainly serve Christians in countries where Christianity is common. Also, with missionary radio, the money almost never comes from the people listening. For other Christian radio, the money often comes from the listeners.
In the past, some countries (like those in the Communist block) limited Christian activities. Missionary stations were very busy broadcasting in many languages to many places. While some of these countries now allow more local Christian activities, others still limit missionary work. So, radio is still used to share the message.
In some countries, only government stations can broadcast. In these cases, stations outside the country are the only way to reach people inside. To broadcast over long distances, missionary stations often use shortwave radio. Sometimes, very powerful AM radio is also used.
