The Christiana Lindsey House
This historic house is made of brick and has two and a half stories. This means it has two full floors and a smaller half-story, usually in the attic area. At the back, there's a two-story addition called a "rear ell," which is like a wing extending from the main part of the house.
What Does it Look Like?
The Christiana Lindsey House is built in the Italianate style. This was a popular style in the 1800s. Italianate homes often have low-pitched roofs, wide overhanging eaves (the part of the roof that sticks out), and tall, narrow windows. They also often feature decorative brackets under the eaves and fancy porches.
This house is about 34 feet wide and 39 feet deep. It sits on a strong foundation made of ashlar sandstone. Ashlar means the stones are carefully cut and shaped to fit together perfectly. The roof is covered with slate, a type of rock that is very durable and often used for roofing. The roof is "truncated hipped," which means it slopes on all four sides but has a flat top.
One of the most eye-catching parts of the house is its front porch. It stretches across the entire front of the house and has many beautiful details. These details make the house look very grand and welcoming.
What Else is on the Property?
Next to the main house, there is also a small building called a "summer kitchen." This building was also built around 1881. In the past, summer kitchens were used for cooking during hot weather. This kept the heat and cooking smells out of the main house. This summer kitchen is considered a "contributing" part of the property. This means it adds to the historical importance of the Christiana Lindsey House.
Why is the House Important?
The Christiana Lindsey House is important enough to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was added to this special list on January 15, 1998. Being on this list means the house is recognized as a significant part of American history and culture.
What is the National Register of Historic Places?
The National Register of Historic Places is like a special list kept by the United States government. It includes buildings, sites, and objects that are important in American history, architecture, archaeology, engineering, or culture. When a place is added to the National Register, it helps to protect it and makes people more aware of its historical value. It encourages people to preserve these important places for future generations to learn from and enjoy.
