Christina Oiticica (born November 23, 1951) is a famous artist from Brazil. She is known for her unique way of creating art. Since 1980, she has been married to the well-known writer Paulo Coelho.

Christina Oiticica uses a special art style. It is like a mix of "land art" and "eco art." Land art uses natural materials from the Earth. Eco art focuses on nature and the environment. Christina lets nature itself help create her paintings. She was part of an experimental art movement in the 1970s in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Her amazing artworks have been shown all over the world.

How Christina Oiticica Makes Art

Christina Oiticica came up with a new way to paint. She combines painting with land art. This idea came to her in the French Pyrenees mountains. She wanted to paint a very long canvas, about 10 meters (33 feet) long. But she did not have a big enough indoor space.

So, she decided to paint outdoors, right in the middle of nature. After she finished painting, she left the canvas outside to dry. The next day, she went back to get it. She found that dust, dirt, leaves, and even some insects had become part of the painting! Nature had added its own special touch to her artwork.

Art Around the World

Christina started using this technique in the forests and mountains of the Pyrenees in France. The art she made there became a book called The Four Seasons.

Later, between 2004 and 2005, she took her art to Brazil. She buried many canvases in the Amazon Rainforest. She left them there for a whole year. The wet and warm forest left its unique marks on her paintings. In 2005, she also took her work to the Sacred Valley of Ganespura in India.

Between 2006 and 2008, Christina chose the Camino de Santiago as her art studio. This is a famous path in Spain where people go on long walks. It is a very special and symbolic place. She created her canvases in different spots along the Way. She used the shapes of rocks, the effects of rain and snow, and the colors of the soil. She also used natural colors and wax. Once the canvases were ready, she "planted" them in the ground. She would then pick them up several months later.

Usually, Christina Oiticica leaves her canvases "planted" for about nine months. This is like the time it takes for a baby to grow. Sometimes, she leaves them for one year, which is the cycle of the four seasons.
