Christine Arnothy (born Irène Kovach de Szendrö) was a French writer who was born in Hungary. She was born in Budapest on November 20, 1930, and passed away on October 6, 2015.

Her first book, J'ai quinze ans et je ne veux pas mourir (which means I Am Fifteen and I Do Not Want to Die), became very famous. It won a special award called the Grand Prix Verité in 1954.

Her Early Life and Writing

Christine Arnothy grew up in Budapest, Hungary. When she was a teenager, the city was under siege in 1945. During this difficult time, she kept a secret diary. She wrote down her experiences by candlelight.

In 1948, her family left Budapest and moved to Austria. Christine continued her studies at a French-speaking school there. She also kept writing in her diary. Later, she moved to France and studied at the Sorbonne University in Paris. It was in France that she started publishing her books under her French name, Christine Arnothy.

Her Famous First Book

Christine Arnothy's first book, J'ai quinze ans et je ne veux pas mourir, was based on her diary. It tells the story of her experiences as a teenager during the 1945 siege of Budapest. The book was very popular and was reviewed by many famous newspapers. These included Harper's Magazine, The Daily Express, The New York Times, and The Times.

Other Works

Christine Arnothy wrote many other books throughout her life. Some of her novels include "Le Cardinal Prisonnier" (The Captive Cardinal) and "La Saison des Américains" (The American Season). She also wrote "Le Cavalier Mongol" in 1976. For this book, she received an award from the French Academy.

Besides her novels, Christine Arnothy also wrote detective stories. She used a different name, William Dickinson, for these books.

Family Life

In 1964, Christine Arnothy married Claude Bellanger, who was a French newspaper publisher. They had two sons together, named Pierre and Francois.
