Growing Up and School
Heppermann grew up in Omaha, Nebraska. She went to Catholic schools. She graduated from an all-girls high school. Then she went to college at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas.
She also earned two master's degrees. One was in children's literature from Simmons College in Boston, Massachusetts. The other was in writing for children and young adults. She got that from Hamline University in Saint Paul, Minnesota.
Her Writing Career
When Christine Heppermann lived in Minneapolis, Minnesota, she was part of the local writing community. She wrote articles for a magazine called Hungry Mind Review. She also helped edit other book review magazines. These included The Five Owls Review and The Riverbank Review.
Heppermann wrote for The Horn Book Magazine for many years. This magazine reviews children's books. She wrote about different topics. She even discussed if book reviewers were critical enough.
Her Books
Heppermann's first book is called City Chickens. It tells a true story. It's about Chicken Run Rescue. This is a place in Minneapolis that helps chickens. They rescue chickens that have been abandoned or aren't wanted.
Her second book is Poisoned Apples: Poems for You, My Pretty. This book is a collection of poems for young adults. It was very popular. Five different book review places gave it "starred reviews." This means they thought it was excellent! It also appeared on many "best books of 2014" lists. These lists included Publishers Weekly and The Boston Globe. Poisoned Apples was even a runner-up for a big award. It was close to winning the Goodreads Choice 2014 Best Poetry Award.
Heppermann's third book is Ask Me How I Got Here. This is a novel written in poems for young adults. The main character is a high school runner named Addie. She goes through a challenging personal journey. Many of the poems use strong images. They show how Addie grows emotionally and spiritually. This book also received "starred reviews" from several book review publications.
Christine Heppermann also writes a series for younger readers. It's called The Backyard Witch series. She co-writes these books with Ron Koertge.
